August 2016 I had a house fire. My hermit crab tanks had to be left for a few days. When I recovered them everyone was alive but buried down in the substrate. It took me a couple days to recover everyone. I was afraid they would overheat but they survived quite well. To date I have not lost any of the hermit crabs that were in the fire.
While forced bathing is discouraged, I did give all of my hermit crabs a ocean water bath just encase there was smoke on them. The 150 gallon tank was not as well sealed as the 75 gallon vertical tank so there was residue on the inside glass.
